2.2.1 HISTORY OF AROMATHERAPY
Aromatherapy has been polished since aged times. But the actual date (or time period) when aromatherapy might have been introduced is much debated. Most expert claims that the ancient Egyptian was the first to practice aromatherapy. Ancient Egyptians administration distinguished the physical and spiritual properties of these oils and used them in their daily life. The Egyptians used these oils for their embalmment method and over time they became aware of the healing properties of these oils (2) (http://www.vanderbilt.edu/AnS/psychology/health_psychology/what_is_aromathery.html)
Egypt was considered the birth place of perfume. It’s been 6,000 ago, Egypt discover the therapeutic profits of massaging with essential oil. The use of aromatics spread all around history from Egypt to Israel, Rome, Greek, and the whole Mediterranean world. Each society formed practices of perfume using oil, but during that age, a great deal about this learning might have been lost. India is the only place in the world where this custom has been never lost.
Essential oil landed in Europe from ancient countries through crusaders. The Europeans apply this learning to their local plants, for example lavender, rosemary and thyme. These oil were not accessible to normal or average persons, because they were very expensive. Thus there was a decline used of essential oil.
The French chemist Dr. René-Maurice Gattefosse who is considered the “father” of modern day aromatherapy was the first to use the term “aromatherapy” in the year 1928. He was actually working in his family’s perfume business and extremely burn himself in a mishap. He burn his hand what’s more forearm to third degree. He puts his hand to the nearest vat of cold liquid to lessen the pain. The liquid was lavender oil. He was shocked to find as much agony decrease and there was no redness, inflammation or rankling. He realized that lavender was healing the burn. The burn cured without a trace or a scar.
For Dr. Gattefosse, this started a lifetime of discovery for him learning about essential oil. He began to investigate lavender oil and continued proceeding a large number of other oils starting from different plants. He learned after his many researched that the healing properties of plants originate in the essential oils. In 1937, he published a book on anti-microbial effects of the oils.
An investigation of history after World War 2 introduces us to Dr. Gattefosse colleague Dr. Jean Valnet, who was a therapeutic Doctor. He started his own investigation on the properties of essential oil during the year after World War 1. He was a restorative doctor in the French armed force during World War 2. Treating various sort of wound. There was an efficiency of supplies and medicines run out including antibiotics. He tried essential oils, the wound mended quickly and infection was lessen. Many fighters were saved due to essential oil.
Dr. Jean Valnet has written about essential oil therapy and in 1964 published the art of aromatherapy and the movement in Europe had rebirth. Around those same time, a French man Albert Coureur, published a book on medical uses of essential oil and Madam Marguerite Maury, a French biochemist create an exceptional system of applying essential oil to the skin with massage and established the 1st aromatherapy center in Paris, Great Britain and Switzerland and learned the rejuvenating properties of essential oils. “Her research was published as The Secret of Life and Youth (1964). Micheline Arcier studies and worked with Maury and valvet and their combined techniques created a form of aromatherapy that is now used around the world.
Many other French medical doctors profoundly skilled in therapeutic essential oil followed Gattefosse and Valnet. Today thousand practice aromatherapy in Russia, France, the Ukrain, England and many other countries. Most people do not know how essential oil went to united states but if we look at history, we figure a third generation characteristic healer from Switzerland , Anna Marie Butler continued the research of essential oil. She gets into contact with Dr. Lapraz and Dr. Durrafourd medical practitioner with essential oil. They were also the president and General Secretary of the French Phyto-Therapy and Aromatherapy association. She took her extensive education through these and establish the “phyto-Aromatherapy” institute in the united state to continue her research on essential oil.
“as we all search for good health and look back to the beginning of a circle. Our ancestors gathered medical plants and herbs to create home remedies for all kind of illness”.
With science exploratory advancement and the presentation of different kinds of chemical drugs, medicines we began to place our wellbeing in the hands of the medical foundation. For a pill or medication of some sort for almost any ailment(along with side effects) we attempt to repair our bodies and health when they are broken instead of keeping them from breaking in the first place.
As a result we distance ourselves with nature and the natural ways that could generally help us maintain our wellbeing (mentally and physically). Our body can do good job at preventing illness and sickness if we take good care of it and provide it with the right things. Our body were not made to procedure chemicals. These same chemicals can be used in natural form(from plant not manufactured copies) to keep us going without side effects.(3)
